A short history of Brierfield

Brierfield began as a scattering of farmhouses called Little Marsden, within Marsden township and the manor of Ightenhill. Coal was probably being dug nearby in the early 17th century. The Ecroyd family of Edge End built the water-powered Lomeshaye Mill for worsted spinning in 1780. Marsden Colliery, also called Brierfield Pit, was begun around 1811. The first cotton mill in the area was built in 1838 for Henry Tunstill and his sons later formed Tunstill Brothers and extended the site. The colliery closed early in 1873 after an explosion in 1872 killed two men. The canal, a turnpike road and the railway drove the town's growth in the 19th century. Many workers moved in from the North Riding of Yorkshire once the lead workings there ran out. Smith & Nephew took over the mill in 1957 to make surgical bandages. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Brierfield Methodist Church, Edge End House and the Town Hall.

Sport and leisure

Brierfield Crown Green Bowls Club provides a bowls pitch while the area also has several football pitches and several tennis courts. Cricket is also played on a pitch in the area and a number of multi-sport pitches are found there too. Heyhead Park is the named open space and a number of children's playgrounds are located nearby. Some of these facilities lie just outside the town centre so it is worth checking exact locations before relying on them for a particular sport.
