A short history of Padiham
Padiham has a name of Anglo-Saxon origin, with early forms such as Padingham. The first element is usually taken to be a personal name, perhaps Padda, a priest Bede named as a helper of Bishop Wilfrid in the late seventh century. The place is not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was never a manor and its land was mostly copyhold under the Manor of Ightenhill in the Honour of Clitheroe. Gilbert de Padiham was the only free tenant in 1258 and by 1311 the Lord of Clitheroe had set up a corn mill driven by water. The town long served as a market for Pendleside produce and was redeveloped in the Industrial Revolution. The River Calder was moved away from Gawthorpe Hall in the early 19th century because of pollution and returned to its old course in the 1960s for open-cast mining.
