A short history of Bradford

The name Bradford comes from Old English terms meaning a wide river crossing, which referred to a place where the Bradford Beck could be crossed at Church Bank. An Anglo-Saxon settlement developed there. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Bradeford and describes the manor as laid waste after the uprising of 1070. It then passed to Ilbert de Lacy and stayed with his family until 1311. By the Middle Ages the town centred on Kirkgate, Westgate and Ivegate and a market was mentioned in 1316. Blast furnaces opened at Low Moor in about 1788 and Bradford Moor Barracks were completed in 1844. The town became a municipal borough in 1847 and gained city status in 1897. Of 766 listed buildings, four are Grade I: Bradford Town Hall, The Wool Exchange, the Cathedral Church of St Peter and Bolling Hall.
