A short history of BR4

A Roman site near West Wickham, probably Noviomagus Cantiacorum, may have been an open-air market. The name is Anglo-Saxon and possibly derives from the Latin vicus. Domesday Book of 1086 records a church, a mill, a wood, 24 villagers and 13 slaves, with Godric son of Karl holding the land from King Edward. The prefix "West" came in the 13th century to separate it from East Wickham. Sir Henry Heydon built Wickham Court, now Grade I listed, in 1469. The Boleyn family later enlarged it and the Lennard family bought it in 1580. The railway station opened in 1882 and the Corporation of London preserved part of the common in 1892. The village stayed small until the 1900s then grew rapidly between the wars. In 1935 Wickham Court became a hotel. The area belonged to Kent until 1965. Twelve listed buildings stand nearby, with the Church of Saint John the Baptist and its lych gate graded II*.
