A short history of Bargod
The name Bargod comes from the River Bargoed, which takes its name from the Welsh word bargod, meaning a border. The later spelling Bargoed was probably a mistaken correction influenced by the Welsh word coed, meaning woods. The settlement sits across the old boundary of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire with Aberbargoed on the Monmouthshire side. It began as a market town and grew substantially after a colliery opened in 1903. Bargoed Town Hall began as a courthouse completed in 1911. From 1949 the Austin Motor Company ran a factory employing miners with pneumoconiosis. L. S. Lowry painted the colliery, which shut in the 1970s; its site is now a country park. The factory closed after engine production ended in 1999. Of the 3 listed buildings within 0.4 miles of the centre the highest graded is Hanbury Road Baptist Chapel and Schoolrooms at Grade II*.
