A short history of Amersham
Amersham takes its name from an Old English phrase meaning Ealhmund's village. Records go back to Anglo-Saxon times, when it appeared as Agmodesham. Queen Edith died in 1075 and the land then passed to William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book of 1086 names the place Elmodesham and lists Geoffrey de Mandeville as holder, with 7 and a half hides, 14 villagers, 4 smallholders, 7 slaves and woodland for 400 pigs. In 1200 a later Geoffrey de Mandeville obtained a charter for a Friday market and a September fair. A charter of 1613 to Edward, Earl of Bedford moved the market to Tuesday and fixed 19 September for a statute fair. Seven Lollard dissenters were burned at the stake in the town in 1521 and a memorial to them followed in 1931. The population in 1841 was 3,098. Old Amersham has the 13th-century Church of St Mary, listed Grade I and Highover Park's High And Over is Grade II*, among 41 listed buildings near the centre.
