The crow-flies distance to London is roughly 150 miles. The M6 motorway runs north-south, connecting to the M56 and M62. Major A-roads include the A34, A50, A500 and A537. Manchester Airport, a major international hub, is the nearest airport, located immediately north of the borough.

Living in Cheshire East

Cheshire East covers the eastern part of Cheshire, a county in North West England that borders Wales. The area takes in part of the Cheshire Plain and the southern hills of the Pennines. It combines historic towns with villages and open countryside. Cheshire has an industrial heritage in salt, chemicals and the railways: Crewe owes its existence to the station that opened on the Grand Junction Railway in 1837 and to the locomotive works built beside it. The county now has a diverse economy that includes financial services.

Wilmslow is a market town 11 miles south of Manchester. Wealthy Manchester merchants made their homes there in the Victorian era once the railway connected it to the city. Rail services still run to Manchester Piccadilly. The town centre is focused on Bank Square, Grove Street and Water Lane, while the River Bollin flows through The Carrs Park, one of several parks in the town.

Nearby at Styal, Samuel Greg built Quarry Bank Mill in 1784 to spin cotton, using the River Bollin to power its waterwheels. The mill is now a museum run by the National Trust. Visitors can also see the Apprentice House, which housed up to 90 child apprentices. Greg built cottages for his workers in the village of Styal.

Alderley Edge is a village known for its affluence, its expensive homes and its Victorian villas, many of them built by Manchester businessmen after the railway arrived. Its cafés and designer shops attract footballers, actors and businesspeople. Above the village rises the Edge, a wooded red sandstone escarpment owned by the National Trust. It stands about 110 metres above the Cheshire Plain and offers views across Cheshire and the Peak District.

Historic towns, attractive villages, open countryside and a position within reach of Manchester explain why many people choose to live in Cheshire East.
