A short history of Cardiff

People were living around Cardiff by about 6000 BC. The Silures held the territory until the Romans built a settlement in the 50s AD and a fort in AD 75. A civilian settlement grew beside it and the site was occupied until at least the 4th century. The Welsh name Caerdydd comes from Caerdyf, meaning the fort of the Taff. Little is known of the following centuries until the Normans came. In 1081 William I visited and ordered work on the castle keep within the old Roman fort. A town of mainly English settlers grew beneath it and by the end of the 13th century it was the only Welsh town above 2,000 people. Cardiff became a city in 1905 and capital in 1955. Of 682 listed buildings within three miles of the centre, Cardiff Castle and the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul are Grade I.
