A short history of Penarth
People have lived in the Penarth area for at least 5000 years and in 1956 several Neolithic axe heads made of stone turned up within the town. The name is Welsh and was long read as meaning head of the bear, though modern scholars suggest it comes from a phrase meaning head of the cliff. From the 12th century until 1543 the land belonged to the canons of St Augustine in Bristol and the Norman church of St Augustine dates from that time. It is now Grade I listed. In the 1570s a special commission investigated piracy on the coast and leading local families were believed to be implicated. In 1851 Penarth was a small farming and fishing village with 24 houses and 105 residents. The growth of the South Wales coalfield and the building of the docks then transformed it. In 1875 the parishes of Penarth, Cogan and Llandough were combined under a new Penarth Local Board and wealthy Cardiff shipping and dock owners built villas along the cliff tops.
