A short history of Caerphilly
The Romans built a fort here around AD 75 and held it until the middle of the second century. The Welsh name Caerffili means the fort of Ffili, which tradition links to a son of St Cenydd, though another explanation points to the Marcher Lord Philip de Braose. Senghenydd stayed in Welsh hands after the Norman invasion until Gilbert de Clare took it in 1266. He began Caerphilly Castle on 11 April 1268 and a small settlement grew up just south of it. Building paused in 1270 after attacks and resumed in 1271. Llywelyn Bren assaulted the castle in January 1316 and burned the town, which was rebuilt but stayed small. A court house was added in the 14th century. In 1583 Thomas Lewis leased the castle and removed stone for his manor, the Van. Caerphilly became a market town in the 1700s and grew with the coal trade in the 19th century. Of 19 listed buildings the castle is the only Grade I.
