A short history of Tonypandy
The Tonypandy area holds prehistoric remains, including Bronze Age cairns and an Iron Age settlement called Hen Dre'r Gelli on the slopes of Mynydd y Gelli. Around the 12th or early 13th century a motte and bailey fortification named Ynysygrug was built, one of two lasting medieval defences in the Rhondda. The name Tonypandy refers to pasture belonging to a fulling mill, which was established in 1838. From the mid-19th century coal mining transformed the valley and the Taff Vale Railway was extended to Treherbert in 1856. Railway construction in the 19th century destroyed most of Ynysygrug. Tonypandy then grew as a centre of services for neighbouring communities. Seven listed buildings stand near the centre. Ebenezer Welsh Independent Chapel and Ysgoldy Ebenezer are both Grade II*.
