A short history of Porth
Porth was wooded and uninhabited in prehistoric times and stayed empty through the medieval period, when it lay in the commote of Glynrhondda. Two bridges over the River Rhondda, Pont Rheola and Pont y Cymmer, were already mentioned by John Leland in the 1530s. Capel y Cymmer was built in 1743 and the area was then called Cymmer, a word for the point where two rivers meet. Coal changed this. After 1809 a tramline serving Walter Coffin's pits ran through the area. Porth Colliery opened in 1845 and Tynewydd Colliery in 1852. The name Porth came from the mining estate and the railway station. On 11 April 1877 a disaster at Tynewydd Colliery led to a rescue effort of note. Mining declined after the 1926 general strike. The highest graded of Porth's 17 listed buildings is Evan Howells Butchers Shop at Grade II*.
