A short history of Buckley
The name was written Bocleghe in 1198 then Bokkeley in 1294. It may come from an Old English term for a clearing of bucks or from a personal name Bocca. In medieval times the area lay within the manors and lordships of Mold, Hawarden and Ewloe. In 1420 Henry V gave his wife Catherine of Valois Ewloe and Buckley's grazing land as a wedding gift worth £26 yearly. Pottery went by donkey to Chester market or by the River Dee as early as Elizabeth I's reign. Coal mining and pottery flourished from the 17th to the 19th centuries with 14 potteries by the early 1800s. Bricks reached the United States and workers came from Ireland and Liverpool. A pantomime began in 1932. A German aircraft came down nearby in the Second World War with its pilot captured. Pottery making ended with the last kiln fired in 1946. St Matthew's Church is Grade II* listed.
