A short history of Rhyl
Early documents mention a dwelling called Ty'n Rhyl and a manor house of that name still stands in the oldest part of the town. The name was spelt Hulle in 1292 and Ryhull in 1301 then Hyll in 1506 and Rhil in 1706 and Rhyll in 1830 before becoming Rhyl in 1840. Its origin has been debated for over a century. Suggestions include a raised area of dry ground among marshes and a lost structure guarding the mouth of the River Clwyd. In the twentieth century a link with sunshine gained favour as Welsh-speaking summer visitors came and the town was advertised as "Sunny Rhyl". Rhyl has been in Denbighshire since 1996. The area within 0.9 miles of the centre has 93 listed buildings, with the Parish Church of St Thomas the only one at Grade II*.
