Torquay began as the landing place serving Torre, an ancient village that was itself named after a tor. The name passed through forms such as Torrequay and Tor Quay before becoming one word. People have lived in the area since Paleolithic times and hand axes from Kents Cavern have been dated to around 40,000 years ago. The first major building was Torre Abbey, a monastery of the Premonstratensian order set up in 1196. The town stayed small until the Napoleonic Wars, when the Channel Fleet anchored in Torbay and officers' relatives visited. Residents numbered 838 in 1801 and had risen to 24,767 by 1887. Torre railway station opened in 1848 followed by the Marine Spa in 1853 and Torquay station in 1859. Torquay became a borough in 1892. The area has 99 listed buildings, including two Grade I, the Parish Church of All Saints and the Roman Church of Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Denis.
