Berry's Wood hill fort has yielded evidence of Neolithic inhabitants while Milber Down camp predates the 1st century BC and Roman coins turned up there. Castle Dyke on Highweek Hill survives from a Norman castle of the motte-and-bailey type. The Domesday survey of 1086 makes no mention of Newton Abbot. It is first recorded in the late 12th century as Nova Villa and William de Briwere granted the land to Torre Abbey in 1196. A market charter came in 1220 while Newton Bushel held its own market across the river. Torre Abbey was dissolved in 1539. Townsmen worked in the Newfoundland cod trade between 1600 and 1850 and the two markets merged in 1633. A new market place opened in 1826 and a corn exchange followed in 1871. The railway works brought rapid Victorian growth. Of 145 listed buildings nearby, four are Grade I: Forde House, St Mary the Virgin, All Saints and Bradley Manor.
