A short history of Kingsteignton

Kingsteignton dates from the early eighth century, when Wessex kings established it as the hub of a sizeable Saxon estate running from Teignmouth to Manaton. It gave its name to the hundred of Teignton. Danish raiders plundered the royal settlement in 1001. By the time of the Domesday Survey the hundred was called Teignbridge, possibly because its court had moved, while Whiteway appears as a Domesday manor. The manor of Kingsteignton remained crown land until the 13th century. In the Middle Ages the Fairwater Leat became the water supply and powered three mills. St Michael's church was rebuilt in the 15th century with its tower raised in the 1480s. The manor passed to the Clifford family in 1509. Until the mid-19th century the church served as the senior church for Highweek and Newton Bushell. Of 41 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Michael and The Chantry and Elmfield are Grade II*.
