A short history of Swanage

Quarrying around Swanage dates back to at least the first century AD and Purbeck marble reached buildings in London under Roman rule. The town appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 877 as Swanwich. The bay was also recorded as Swanawic and Sandwich. Marble quarrying resumed in the 12th century. After the Great Fire of London in 1666 stone began to be loaded onto ships directly from the seafront. Newton Manor started as a 17th century farmhouse. The lock-up dates from 1803 and Princess Victoria visited a hotel in the town in 1833. John Mowlem and his nephew George Burt then shaped the Victorian town, building its first pier and its earliest gas and water works. Burt raised a memorial to Prince Albert in 1862. The lighthouse followed in 1880 and the town hall in the early 1880s. The railway arrived in 1885 and Burt completed the Great Globe in 1887. Of 119 listed buildings nearby, Newton Manor is the only Grade II*.
