A short history of Wareham
Excavations at nearby Bestwall found activity from around 9000 BCE. A small Roman settlement existed but the present town was founded by the Saxons and appears as Werham in an entry for 784, a name linked to a fish trap or weir and a homestead or enclosure. Earth ramparts that Alfred the Great probably had built during the 800s defended it against the Danes, who occupied it in 876. Canute's invasion left it in ruins in 1015. By the end of Saxon times it held two mints. William I harried the town in 1067 and the Normans later built a castle. A fire in 1762 swept away two thirds of the town, which was rebuilt in Georgian style. Of 185 listed buildings nearby, four are Grade I: St Martin's Church, the Manor House, Holy Trinity Gallery and Lady St Mary.
