A short history of East Cowes

The settlement was first recorded in 1303 as Shamblord and its eastern part grew larger than the western. The present name came later from fortifications raised under Henry VIII, which took their name from sandbanks in the Medina estuary. John Nash began building East Cowes Castle in 1798 and entertained the Prince Consort there. He died in 1835 and lies in the church tower of St James, which was also his work. Queen Victoria made Osborne House her summer home. A scheme for an estate of large houses failed for lack of money but Kent House and Powys House survive. East Cowes became an urban district in 1894 and merged with Cowes in 1933. Bombing damaged the J. Samuel White shipyard in May 1942 and East Cowes Castle was demolished in the 1960s. East Cowes became a parish in 1998. Osborne House is Grade I listed.

Osborne Golf Club has a golf course and East Cowes Marina and the Harbour Office provide marina facilities.
