A short history of Cowes
An older name, Shamelord, was recorded in the 13th century. The present name comes from two sandbanks on the Medina estuary called Estcowe and Westcowe. Around 1539 Henry VIII had forts built on both banks against French and Spanish invaders and Cowes Castle survives from the western one without its Tudor towers. The vessel Rat o' Wight was built on the Medina in 1589 for Queen Elizabeth I. Cowes and East Cowes shared the name The Cowes until 1769. George IV later presented a cup to mark a regatta held there. The name West Cowes was officially changed to Cowes on 21 August 1895. Northwood House passed to the town in 1929 and Cowes merged with East Cowes in 1933. The Polish destroyer Błyskawica helped defend the town in the air raid of 4/5 May 1942. Sixteen listed buildings stand near the centre, with the Round House the highest graded at Grade II*.
