A short history of Locks Heath
Strawberry growing shaped Locks Heath from the late 19th century. The Enclosure Acts of 1866 let common land be split into small plots, starting the industry. On 2 September 1889 a railway station at Swanwick began operating, letting large quantities of fruit reach buyers nationwide. A warehouse near the station was once the Swanwick and District Basket Factory. Ewan Christian designed the church of St John the Baptist, completed in 1895. Production peaked in the 1920s then declined through demand for development land, foreign competition and stricter retailer requirements. Houses now cover much of the former farmland, often in small estates. The Talisman and Joseph Paxton pubs take their names from strawberry varieties. The church was extended in 1998. Within 1.3 miles of the centre stand 33 listed buildings all at Grade II including the stables of Great Abshot House and the Old Smithy at the Forge.
