A short history of Botley

Botley grew up at a Roman road crossing of the River Hamble and was settled by at least the 10th century, when it was known as Bottaleah, a name thought to refer to a person called Botta and a woodland clearing. Rising sea levels before the Norman Conquest moved the crossing further north, shifting the focus of the village. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists it as Botelie, with two water-powered mills and fewer than 100 people. The mills were held by the family of Ralph de Mortimer until 1304. Henry III granted a market and annual fair charter in 1267. After the dissolution of the monasteries the manor passed to Thomas Wriothesly. The first bridge over the tidal river was built in 1797 and William Cobbett lived in the village from 1805. Botley Market Hall dates from 1848 and the railway arrived in 1841. Of 35 listed buildings nearby, all are Grade II.
