A short history of Bideford

Bideford takes its name from a ford over the River Torridge, where the water is tidal and early records spell it in several ways including Bedeford and Byddyfrod. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the manor of Bideford as held in chief from William the Conqueror by the Saxon nobleman Brictric and later by the king's wife Matilda of Flanders. It records 30 villagers, 8 smallholders and 14 slaves, within the hundred of Merton. A charter of 1272 from Henry III to Richard V de Grenville created the town's first council. The Grenville family were lords of the manor for centuries. Sir Richard Grenville built a mansion on the quayside in 1585 and created the Port of Bideford in 1575 and the town grew into a trading port with the American colonies, later handling tobacco. St Mary's Church holds the monument to Sir Thomas Grenville, who died in 1513. In the Civil War the town sided with Parliament. Bideford Bridge and The Royal Hotel are both Grade I, among 251 listed buildings.
