Castle Hill in Great Torrington was the site of Iron Age and medieval castles and forts. The town's name combines the River Torridge with the Old English word tūn, meaning a settlement. In 1646 the Parliamentarians under Sir Thomas Fairfax entered the town and defeated Lord Hopton's forces, ending Royalist resistance in the West Country. The Royalists held Parliamentarian prisoners in the church, where 70 barrels of gunpowder exploded and killed the captives and many of their captors. The neoclassical Town Hall was completed in 1861 and the London and South Western Railway brought a station to the town in July 1872. Within 0.4 miles of the centre stand 88 listed buildings, 84 at Grade II and four at Grade II*: the Church Of St Michael And All Angels, Market House, 28 South Street and Palmer House including its garden wall.
