A short history of Hindhead
The name Hindhead is first recorded in 1571 and refers to a hill frequented by female deer. In 1736 a robber named Stephen Phillips was convicted at the Old Bailey after admitting to a theft of 150 gold guineas on the London road. In 1786 three men were convicted of murdering an unknown sailor and were hung in chains on Gibbet Hill. Robberies and crimes of this kind became less frequent in the 19th century once the railway carried much of the freight. The place grew into a sizeable settlement towards the end of that century. A temporary mission church was built in 1904 and John Duke Coleridge was chosen as architect of St Alban's in Beacon Hill after a competition in 1906. An RAF radar station operated on Gibbet Hill from March 1942. Fire destroyed the original high altar of St Alban's in 1999. Nine listed buildings stand near the centre and all are Grade II.
