An Iron Age lake village near Godney was built about 300 BC and lasted until around AD 100. The name comes from Old English and appears in the 7th and early 8th century as Glestingaburg. Centwine, ruling from 676 to 685, became the earliest Saxon supporter of the abbey, which then shaped the town for 700 years. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the hundred of Glastingberiensis, with the abbey as lord in 1066 and Godwin as lord of Glastingberi in 1086. The abbey manor barn dates from the 14th century and the Church of St John the Baptist from the 15th. The area has 151 listed buildings, nine of them Grade I, including Glastonbury Abbey and the Tribunal.
