A short history of Street
Evidence of Roman occupation survives around Street, including villa remains on the southern edge and a Roman road crossing the floodplain of the River Brue. The earliest known name was Lantokay, meaning the sacred enclosure of the Celtic saint Kea. The present name comes from the Old English word for a Roman road and appears as Stret in Anglo-Saxon charters of 725 and 971. Sharpham Park is first recorded in a grant to Aethelwold in 957. Glastonbury Abbey controlled Street until the Dissolution. In the 12th century a causeway carried local Blue Lias stone to the abbey, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1184. Sharpham Park passed to the abbots in 1191. In 1488 Ivythorn Manor, a medieval monastic house, was reconstructed for John Selwood, abbot of Glastonbury. The Quaker Clark family later began the business that became C&J Clark. Of 31 listed buildings nearby, the Church of the Holy Trinity is Grade I.
