A short history of Hawkinge
The name Hawkinge comes from the Old English hafocing, which may mean a place linked to hawks or possibly a place belonging to a man called Hafoc. The original village lay a little under a mile east of the present centre and the modern village formed when Hawkinge joined with Uphill. Two listed buildings stand within half a mile of the centre, both Grade II: Terlingham Manor and Maypole Farm. During the Second World War RAF Hawkinge was the operational airfield nearest to France and was used in the Battle of Britain. The local Women's Institute fell to five members yet still produced 350kg of jam. After the war house building was held up when pipe bombs were discovered, laid in case of a German invasion to disable the airfield. Hawkinge Cemetery holds 95 Second World War casualties, mostly airmen, including 59 Germans.
