Settlement at Folkestone dates from the Mesolithic era. An Iron Age community on the East Cliff made quern-stones and traded them for continental pottery and wine. A Roman-style villa was built there in the 1st century AD and a grander one around 200 AD before abandonment in the 3rd or 4th century. In 630 Eanswythe founded a nunnery near the present church of St Mary & St Eanswythe. The name Folcanstan appears from the late 7th century and probably means Folca's stone. Eanswythe's remains were moved within the church in 1138. Thomas Telford built the harbour in 1809 and the railway arrived in 1843. The remains were found again in June 1885. Sandgate Castle and the Church of St Martin are among 113 listed buildings nearby and both are Grade I.
