A short history of Godalming
Godalming is thought to have been settled by Anglo-Saxons in the 6th or early 7th centuries around the site of the parish church, whose oldest stonework dates from about 820 to 840. Its earliest surviving record is a copy of the will of Alfred the Great, written about 880 to 885, which names the settlement as Godelmingum. Late in the Anglo-Saxon period it served as the seat of local administration for the Godalming Hundred. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Godelminge, held by Ranulf Flambard, with land for 25 plough teams, three mills, two churches and an annual income of £34. Farncombe appears there as Fernecome, held by Odo of Bayeux. Woollen kersey cloth was made in Godalming for much of the Middle Ages. Edward I granted the first charter in 1300, allowing a weekly market and an annual fair and Elizabeth I made Godalming a self-governing borough in 1575. Knitted goods followed from the 17th century. The Pepperpot was built in 1814. The Church of St Peter and St Paul is the one Grade I listed building among 151 near the centre.
