A short history of Coxheath
The name appears as Cokkyshoth in 1422 and 1489 and as Coxhoth in 1585 and the Cock Inn, founded in 1568, may relate to its origin. A beacon was set up on the ridge in 1588, the year of the Armada. Until the eighteenth century the heath was empty ground haunted by highwaymen and later known for duels. Cricket was played there from the 1720s. In 1756 the Seven Years' War turned it into a camp for 12,000 Hanoverian and Hessian troops. George III reviewed the troops there in 1778. The camp closed in 1815 and the heath was enclosed in 1817. The Coxheath Union formed in 1835 and a workhouse followed in 1836. The parish was created in 1964. Of 47 listed buildings nearby, two are Grade II*: the Church of All Saints and The Wool House.
