A short history of Bearsted

The settlement was known in Anglo-Saxon times as Bergestede, which has been read as meaning place on the hill or barrow and earlier forms such as Berghamstyde and Berghstede are also recorded. If the first part of the name refers to a burial mound, the church may stand on a site that was revered earlier. Bearsted may be the Berghamstyde where Wihtred, King of Kent, convened a council in 696 and issued laws that rank among the earliest written Saxon codes. The Church of the Holy Cross has a partly Saxon stone arch with later work built around it and stone beasts on three corners of its tower. It is Grade I listed. The Green was once called the Hothe and served as common land. Many of the buildings that shape its character went up between the 15th and 17th centuries. The area now has 53 listed buildings, with 52 at Grade II.
