Caesar's Camp, an Iron Age hillfort, lies just north of the town and the Roman Devil's Highway crossed the area. The name comes from the Old English Ferneberga, a hill covered in ferns. The Domesday Book of 1086 records a small hamlet within the manor of Crondall, where Odin de Windesores held 3 hides of land. The railway of the 1830s drew London commuters. In 1905 the Royal Engineers brought their School of Ballooning to Laffan's Plain. Samuel Cody joined them in 1906 and made Britain's first powered flight in 1908. The Royal Flying Corps took over the Balloon School headquarters in 1912 and the Royal Aircraft Establishment took its name in 1918.
