A short history of Fleet
Fleet began as open heath in the north of the Crondall Hundred and its name refers either to Fleet Pond or to a stream running north from it. In medieval times the pond supplied fish to the monks at Winchester. The name was recorded as Flete in 1313 and as le Flete in 1505. A map of 1759 shows the area as uninhabited common land called Crookham Common, with three small habitations nearby. The Basingstoke Canal opened in 1792 and crossed the site, but beyond a few inns it changed little. The area stayed largely undeveloped until the London and South Western Railway opened in 1840. Fleet now has 10 listed buildings, of which 8 are Grade II and 2 are Grade II*, namely Christ Church and the Church of All Saints.
