A short history of Caterham
An Iron Age hillfort called The Cardinal's Cap stands on White Hill. It was once thought to be Roman or Neolithic until excavations in 1950 dated it. Caterham lay within the Anglo-Saxon division of Tandridge hundred. The origin of the name is uncertain, with theories pointing to a chair-shaped hill or to a settlement connected with someone called Catta. In the 12th century Geoffrey of Caterham gave land to his son. In the reign of King John his descendant Roger son of Everard de Gaist handed the church and its holdings to the monastery at Waltham Holy Cross, which received a grant of free warren in 1253 and held the manor until the dissolution. In 1339 land was released to Roger Salaman and a manor of Salmons later appeared. In 1544 the Crown granted the rectorial manor to William Sackville. The Norman church of St Lawrence is Grade I listed and 16 other buildings near the centre are Grade II.
