A short history of Banstead

A charter of 967, from King Edgar's time, holds the earliest recorded mention of Banstead. The Domesday Book of 1086 names it Benestede, probably from an Anglo-Saxon word for bean and another for a settlement lacking town status. Richard held the lay land and 50 households under the Bishop of Bayeux. It lists 9½ hides, a church, a mill worth £1, 17 ploughs and woodland worth 20 hogs, rendering £8 yearly. The Crown gained the manor in the 13th century. Henry VIII gave it to Sir Nicholas Carew, whose family kept it until the 18th century. Horse racing made the Downs well known in the 1600s. Charles II attended a meeting near the village core on 20 November 1683. Growth came gradually from the late 19th century. Fifteen listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of All Saints and Banstead Place, both Grade II*.
