A short history of Bagshot

Excavations have shown that people settled around Bagshot before the Romans arrived, with Late Bronze Age occupation identified and iron smelting apparently a major local activity. Earlier opinion had placed the first settlement in the late Saxon period. The name first appears in 1165 as Bagsheta, referring to a wood and possibly meant Bacga's wood. The area once included a Royal forest and a Royal hunting lodge stood there through Tudor and Stuart times, now called Bagshot Park. In the late 16th century Bagshot prospered on the main road from London to the West Country, developing inns for stagecoach passengers and stables for fresh horses. The Exeter Telegraph stopped there for 20 minutes during its 17 hour journey to Devon. The road also attracted highwaymen, among them William Davis, a farmer caught at the White Hart Inn in Bagshot. Eight listed buildings stand near the centre, seven at Grade II and 44, High Street at Grade II*.

For open space, Bagshot Green and School Lane Field are the named parks. Several children's playgrounds are also located nearby.
