A short history of Camberley

The land around Camberley was known as Bagshot or Frimley Heath and in the Middle Ages it formed part of Windsor Forest. Its poor soil kept it largely uncultivated and the turnpike road across it had a reputation for highwaymen in the 17th century. Building of the Royal Military College began in 1812 and a settlement grew nearby, renamed Yorktown in 1831. St Michael's church there was built in 1848. The Staff College opened in 1862 and a second settlement, Cambridge Town, was laid out around then. The General Post Office renamed the town Camberley in 1877 to stop mail going to Cambridge. The railway arrived in 1878. The area has 17 listed buildings, all Grade II.
