The Domesday Book of 1086 records Witenestaple, a name meaning a meeting place at a white post, as the centre of a hundred with manors at Seasalter, Northwood and Swalecliffe. Fisheries lay at Seasalter and saltworks at Northwood. The name was Whitstaple by 1226 and a sea wall went up at Seasalter in 1325. Henry VIII later seized the manor and gave it to the Minter family. A royal patent for the oyster beds came in 1574 and Tankerton joined the manor. The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway opened in 1830 and the harbour in 1832. Near the centre stand 90 listed buildings including the Grade II* Church of All Saints.
