A short history of Herne Bay

Herne Bay is named after the nearby village of Herne, recorded around 1100 as Hyrnan from an Old English word for a corner. The town began as a small shipping and farming community. A smugglers' gang worked from the town until it was overpowered in the 1820s. In the 1830s London investors built a wooden pier and promenade and the town grew quickly. Their plan to rename it St Augustine's was unpopular with residents. Christ Church opened in 1834 and a clock tower believed to be the world's first freestanding purpose-built one followed in 1837. Work on a longer iron pier began in 1896 and the population nearly doubled between 1881 and 1901. The first of the "Brides in the Bath" murders took place here in 1912. A storm destroyed the centre of the pier in 1978. Of 37 listed buildings near the centre all are Grade II.
