The parish church of St Peter and St Paul is mostly 13th century with some Early Norman material. Its register begins in 1559. Richard Norman Shaw designed All Saints' Church in 1894 for cement workers. Lightning damaged the parish church in 1902. On 10 November 1940 a bomb destroyed The Morning Star Inn and killed 27 people. A flying bomb killed 13 on Taunton Road on 30 July 1944. Of seven listed buildings near the centre the parish church is Grade I and the former All Saints is Grade II*.
