A short history of Filton
The name Filton comes from Anglo-Saxon words for hay and farmstead. In 1880 boys found thousands of Roman coins in a bank, including coins of Domitian, Constantine and Constans. Early in the 1900s Filton was a village still apart from Bristol, with farming as its chief occupation and a large laundry owned by Samuel Shield opposite Filton House. Bristol Tramways moved its northern terminus there in 1907 and tram production began in 1908. Aeroplane manufacture began in 1910 when Filton Junction station also opened. Aero-engine production followed in 1920. Between the wars Filton grew rapidly into a suburb, with semi-detached housing west of the A38 first and the eastern side developed from the 1930s. In the late 1940s the aerodrome runway was extended for the Bristol Brabazon project and Charlton village was demolished. Eleven Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including a gate and piers by Filton House.
