A short history of Patchway

In the early 1900s Patchway was a small village gathered around Patchway Green, a spot since renamed Patchway Common. One section lay across Gloucester Road close to the Great Western Railway route between Bristol and South Wales. Industry arrived in 1920 when the Bristol Aeroplane Company took over Cosmos Engineering and the flying school at Filton Aerodrome became an aeroengine factory. New housing followed on Patchway Estate during the 1930s and the company began East Works on Gypsy Patch Lane as rearmament got under way. A dual carriageway bypass was laid through the estate in the late 1930s. In the late 1940s the runway extension for the Bristol Brabazon airliner led to the demolition of the hamlet of Charlton and many of its residents were rehoused on Patchway Estate. Patchway became a civil parish in 1953. Bungalow estates and a large overspill estate were added in the 1950s and 1960s. Four listed buildings, all Grade II, lie near the centre, including houses on Park Avenue and hangars at Filton Airfield.
