A short history of Stratton St Margaret

Stratton takes its name from the Latin word for a paved way, after a Roman road that crossed the parish on a line from the north-west towards the south-east. Domesday Book in 1086 lists the place as Stratone, held by Nigel, who served William the Conqueror as physician. The settlement then lay in three hamlets joined by footpaths and coffin-ways. In 1316 Queen Margaret held Upper and Lower Stratton in dower, which began the association with her name and by 1445 the place appears as "Margrete Stratton". Walter de Merton, Bishop of Rochester, bought the manor and gave it to Merton College, Oxford. A priory in the parish was taken by Henry VI and given to King's College, Cambridge. The Highworth and Swindon Workhouse was built here from 1834 and a hospital followed in 1852. Eighteen listed buildings stand within a mile of the centre, with the Church of St Margaret the only one at Grade I.
