A short history of Great Wakering

Medieval tradition places a monastery at Wakering in the 7th century, where two murdered cousins of King Ecgberht of Kent were said to have been enshrined as saints. The origin of the name is unclear, though the most accepted theory links it to an East Saxon tribe called the Waeccer. In Saxon times the place seems to have been a single vill. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Wachering in the Rochford Hundred, by then split into two manors that Swein of Essex held. Historians judge that the manor worth £10 a year was Great Wakering and the one worth £4 was Little Wakering. Neither entry mentions a priest or church, yet the oldest parts of St Nicholas' Parish Church date from around 1100. Brick-making later became the main industry and the Star Lane works closed in 1991. The village was badly hit by the North Sea flood of 1953. Fifteen listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II.
