A short history of Ashingdon

Ashingdon is presumed to lie near the site of the Battle of Ashingdon, fought on 18 October 1016, with Edmund Ironside's camp thought to have stood on Ashingdon Hill. King Canute ordered a church built on the hill in 1020 and his priest Stigand served there first. Stigand was later Archbishop of Canterbury in 1066. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Ashingdon and South Fambridge as well as the Manor of Beckney. Aviation research began in the parish in 1908 and an aerodrome opened officially in February 1909. Flying stopped during the First World War then resumed in 1919, later centred on Canewdon Road. In 1936 a Moth biplane leaving the aerodrome crashed into trees beside the church. By the late 1930s flying had moved to Southend. Two listed buildings stand near the centre, the highest graded being the Church of St Andrew at Grade II*.
