A short history of Highworth

The hill above the Upper Thames Valley appears to have been settled with few breaks over some seven thousand years. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Wrde, a name from an Old English word for an enclosure, with six households and a church. The prefix High came into use around 1200 and a market charter followed in 1206. In 1508 the Lollard miller John Goodson was burned for heresy at Lammas. Sir Thomas Fairfax captured the Royalist town on 17 June 1645 and Parliamentarian troops garrisoned it until the October after. The occupation coincided with a severe plague outbreak. Traders moved to Swindon and the market recovered only near the end of that century. The Napoleonic Wars and Industrial Revolution brought growth and many town centre houses. Of 95 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Michael is Grade I and eight others are Grade II*.
