A short history of Bushey

Chance finds of Stone Age tools show that people lived around Bushey as far back as the Palaeolithic period and the main road through the town follows a Roman route. Possible Roman villa sites have turned up locally, along with a Roman tessellated pavement near Chiltern Avenue. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Bissei, a small farming village. The name comes from Old English words for a bush or thicket and an enclosure. During the 12th century the spelling shifted to Bisheye. Until the 18th century Bushey Heath was heavily wooded and tales of highwaymen grew up around its roads. During the Napoleonic Wars waste land to the east, known as Bushey Common, was given to local landowners for farming. The London and Birmingham Railway passed through in the 1830s, crossing Bushey Arches Viaduct, which dates from 1837. Change was greatest between 1860 and 1960, with the first council houses built in the early 1920s. Post-war Green Belt protection ended further expansion. Today 56 listed buildings stand near the centre and Lululand and the Church of St James are both Grade II*.

Bushey Grove Leisure Centre and David Lloyd Leisure Centre are the two sports centres within reach of the town centre. Open space includes King George Recreation Ground, Moatfield Recreation Ground and The Paddocks Recreation Ground, along with Bushey Manor Field, Bushey Rose Garden, Bushey Dog Walking Park and Fishers Field Nature Reserve.
