A short history of Epping
The name Epping comes from an Old English word meaning the inhabitants of an elevated spot. The Domesday Book of 1086 records "Epinga" as a hamlet of dispersed farms with a chapel beside the forest, though that entry refers to the settlement now called Epping Upland. By the mid-12th century a settlement called Epping Heath, later Epping Street, had grown to the south as forest was cleared for cultivation. All Saints' church at Epping Upland was first mentioned in 1177. In 1253 Henry III granted a weekly market in Epping Street. In the early 1800s the High Street was home to 26 inns serving coach travellers and The George and Dragon and The Black Lion survive. The railways ended coach traffic and brought a decline, but a branch line from Loughton in 1865 helped a revival. The town has 35 listed buildings, including two at Grade II*: the Church of St John the Baptist and Epping Place.
